Read Mark 16: 1-8
Easter Day is victory day – the glorious victory of the resurrection! How different everything would have been if no Easter message had been preached to the world. Without it there would have been no gospel. If God had allowed the forces of evil to defeat and crush perfect goodness on Calvary then we could not go on believing in his justice, his faithfulness and his love.
Only the resurrection was capable of changing the seeming tragedy of Good Friday into the good news of Easter Day – into a message of power and victory and hope. If the resurrection had not happened it is impossible to understand how Christ’s followers could have gone out, as they did, into the world to preach a message of hope. If they had nothing better to tell the world than that a good man had died they would have been wasting their time.
So let us remember that if the gospel has been the power that it has been in the world, it is because it is a story which has the resurrection at the heart of it. It has power precisely because it tells us, not of a dead martyr but of a living Lord. Christ’s resurrection promises new life beyond the grave and gate of death. By dying he destroyed our death; by rising he has restored our life.
Christ has died, has risen, Christ will come again. Alleluia!
